The 20th International Jewish Music Festival 2017 will take place from May 4-8, 2017 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, with the 5th IJMF music competition. First rounds and semi finals will be held at the rebuilt and refurbished Uilenburger Synagogue with the Grand Finale taking place in the DeLaMar Theater, one of Europe’s most beautiful theaters for an audience of some 1000 persons.
The Uilenburger Sjoel (synagogue) is a historic monument in the Louis XV-style (rococo). It was originally established in 1766 for the holding of Jewish religious services, and it served as such for nearly 200 years. It is one of the few remaining original buildings constructed on the former island of Uilenburg. Following the Second World War, the building was used for various purposes, and has since been handed over by the Municipality of Amsterdam to the Uilenburgersjoel Foundation. This foundation was set up at the end of 2002 with the aim of giving the Uilenburger synagogue back its Jewish character and making it a social and cultural centre for a variety of Jewish organizations.
The main restoration was finalized in 2016 keeping the authentic elements and atmosphere of the building, but modernizing the infrastructure as far as possible. The building is used for concerts, synagogue services, party venue, meeting room and private functions
The DeLaMar theater, in the heart of Amsterdam, is one of Europe’s most beautiful theaters with lots of musical and theatrical productions. Rebuild under supervision of Joop v.d.Ende, the lush theaters houses events, musicals, gala’s, concerts and is also decorated with splendid photo exhibitions from award winning photographers as well as statues of Hollands most famous actors and singers.
The big hall, a beautiful theatre auditorium, with an overhanging balcony, features 949 comfortable seats. Despite its spacious capacity, this hall is very intimate and full of ambience.
On May 8th, 2017, the Grand Final of the competition at the 5th International Jewish Music Festival will be held in this auditorium.
