Sima’s Songs with Yoed Sorek and Dr. Hankus Netsky – Holocaust Remembrance Concert
On the evening of May 4th, we will present a special concert: Yoed Sorek, winner of the 2014 IJMF Mira Rafalowicz award for Best Yiddish performance will present his program: Sima’s Songs.
May 4th marks Hollands National Remembrance Day, a commemoration of all Dutch victims – civilians and soldiers – who have been killed during and since the Second World War. One of the highlights of the day is the ceremony on Amsterdam’s Dam Square with the King and Queen, broadcast live on all Dutch TV Channels. Afterwards Yoed Sorek, winner of the 2014 IJMF Mira Rafalowicz Award for Best Yiddish performance, will present his special program: Sima’s Songs. He reads some parts of the book written by his grandmother Sima, about her life in the ghetto of Vilna. She survived this ghetto and was later liberated from Bergen Belsen. Yoed will also sing the famous Yiddish songs from that period. Yoed is a Yiddish Folk and Art Song artist and synagogue chazzan (cantor) from Munich, Germany, who also hosts Holocaust memorials in Germany. (http://yoedsorek.weebly.com/)
He will be accompanied by one of our distinguished jury members, Dr. Hankus Netsky, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and ethnomusicologist. Dr. Hankus Netsky is Chair of New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Improvisation Department, a pioneering multi-cultural music department now in its 41st year, and founder and director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, an internationally renowned Yiddish music ensemble
